There are many theories and the words Cloud and Grid are very much misused to sell regular web apps because its very popular right now. I myself think the best and the most accurate explanation is the following:

BTW Grid computing has evolved in CERN, and currently they have the most powerful grid in the world, and they are using it to compute the results from the LHC, and others Labs where information must be captured and processed within a nano second. -> Really freaky stuff
